Be “Paver Wise”

Choosing the right contractor for your project is extremely important. Check out these tips below to help you choose the right one

paver
  • What is the contractor’s primary business? Does he only do Hardscaping and Pavers?
  • Does the contractor have his own in-house crews, or do they use subcontractors?
  • Is the contractor ICPI (Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute) Certified? The ICPI sets the industry standards for interlocking paving installations
  • How will the contractor pitch the patio/walkway area for proper drainage and water runoff? Will they use a minimum of ⅛” per foot?
  • Will the excavated area be a minimum of 6 to 12 inches wider than the actual paved area to insure proper edge stability?
  • What type of edge restraint will they use, and does it conform to ICPI standards?
  • Will the contractor excavate a minimum of 12 inches for vehicular areas and 7 ½ inches for pedestrian areas?
  • Will the contractor use base material with proper gradation for the pavers? This facilitates proper compaction while allowing for proper water drainage.
  • Will the gravel base be compacted with proper water moisture, and in equal lifts to achieve the maximum compaction?
  • Does the contractor use ICPI recommended ASTM C-33 Concrete Sand for a dense grade system or chip stone for an open grade system  not more than one inch to 1 inch thick?
  • Will the contractor assure an even color mix on your project? (Pavers should be used from multiple pallets and worked in together to assure an even color mix.)
  • Will the contractor properly install the polymeric sand following manufacturing guidelines?
  • How long will the contractor offer their guarantee, and what will the guarantee provide?
  • Does the contractor carry General Liability Insurance?
  • Is the contractor licensed in the state of New Jersey as a Home Improvement Contractor?
